Reviews for the Toshiba NB100

Netbook from Toshiba. The fight for netbook-market shares goes on. It might be that every renowned notebook manufacturer has, ter the meantime, brought one or even more netbook models onto the market but the request for mini-notebooks doesn’t emerge to come to a zekering. One prototype is followed by the next. If Toshiba’s NB-100 can stand out from the broad mass of netbooks and presents an enrichment for the already very big netbook range or rather goes with the flow, is unveiled ter this test report.

It won’t be a verrassing to anyone that Toshiba has a netbook te its portfolio. After all, netbooks are a popular veelzijdig of pc and there is money to be made te bringing them to market. However Toshiba is wary of the netbook nomenclature, and instead chooses to call the range ter which the NB100 sits ‘mini laptops’ . Toshiba may be calling its range ‘mini laptops’, but the NB100 lacks sophistication. Future models will hopefully address some of the shortcomings.

While others manufacturers wasted no time ter leaping on the netbook bandwagon, Toshiba has taken an absolute age to get its own Intel Atom-powered machine on the market. But, with the NB100, has Toshiba learned from the mistakes of others or simply repeated the sins of the past? The Toshiba NB100 has welvoeglijk battery life and a good-quality screen, but it’s let down by a cramped keyboard and lack of Bluetooth support. With so many high-quality netbooks vying for your attention at the ogenblik, the NB100 doesn’t truly offerande anything that makes it stand out.

The only real decision you have to make when choosing a netbook is screen size. Do you go for a super portable but slightly cramped 8.9-incher, like the Toshiba NB100, or a comfy but larger 10-incher? The NB100 is, however, a good looker – and cheap, too, if you go for the Ubuntu version rather than the more expensive XP one.

Fine mobility and software, but too flawed to be an essential purchase. Spil with Samsung, Toshiba wasgoed relatively late to inject the fast-growing netbook market. When it ultimately released the NB100 range last year, wij were left slightly under-whelmed, but that’s not to say that this prototype, the NB100-128, isn’t still worth consideration. Albeit the excellent storage, battery life and screen quality of the Toshiba NB100-128 make it effortless to recommend, it falls too far brief of its rivals to be an essential purchase. At this price, you may find that other options are a better overall gezond for your needs.

Toshiba’s NB100-128 is a puny, light and fairly rugged netbook which runs very calmly. But despite getting more out its four-cell battery than most, it can’t keep up with six-cell netbooks te the battery life stakes, looks abate once opened up and its awful keyboard combined with a below-par touchpad means using it might be more ache than pleasure. A higher price than the competition doesn’t do it any favours either.

There are netbooks that have a curvy, kid-friendly look. Others are sleek and shiny – every one aimed at adults. Then there are blocky, serious looking ones, carved with no concession to consumer levity and fluff because the manufacturer reckons that’s what businesspeople want. It’s not the sexiest netbook out there, fairly the switch roles, but the NB100 is no slouch when running at standard speed and produces a good battery life too. It’s by no means a bad machine. Wij just wish Toshiba had come up with something a little less abate.

There’s a hefty amount to like about the NB100, Toshiba’s very first netbook. Here te Australia, unlike ter the UK where a slick custom-built Ubuntu Linux implementation is available, you only have the option of Windows XP Huis on the NB100. With that, you get welvoeglijk specifications, commencing with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor and the standard 1GB of RAM. The hard disk is well-sized, if not spil large spil the HP Mini, at 120GB, providing slew of slagroom for documents, music and other media. Te this cut-price market Toshiba’s netbooks look a little expensive – especially considering the bland vormgeving. If the NB100 drops ter price, tho’, it could be worth a look.

Last verrassing that Toshiba NB100 had for us wasgoed price tag: it is ter range of similar products from less known brand names. Obviously Toshiba is aware of the fact that they came late and one way to compensate this is by suggesting better accessories and better quality build but it is demonstrable that they failed ter this segment. 2nd path that can be undertaken is to use wise price politics and suggest to customers product with well established brand for price similar to products from meteen competitors. Spil long spil Toshiba proceed to use moderate price for NB100 it will have its position on the market and buyers can be nothing less than pleased.

A little Toshiba netbook which doesn’t cut corners on features. The only real decision you have to make when choosing a netbook is screen size. Do you go for a super portable but slightly cramped 8.9-incher, like the Toshiba NB100, or a comfy but larger 10-incher? Albeit the Toshiba shares exactly the same keyboard vormgeving spil the similarly sized Asus 901, it doesn’t overcome the size constraints fairly spil well. The NB100 is, however, a good looker – and cheap, too, if you go for the Ubuntu version rather than the more expensive XP one.

The Toshiba NB100-11R is a well-made and smart-looking example of how to make a powerful mini laptop – not powerful te the sense of raw processing power but by covering most users needs, out of the opbergruimte, with a trim and reliable interface.

Just like Dell with its Inspiron Mini 9, Toshiba has eased into the netbook fray with an 8.9in affair. Rather than suggesting a radical vormgeving, integrating 3G or supplying stunning specs, it’s pinning its early hopes on reputation – a ",netbook from a brand you can trust", is its non-too subtle tagline. A superb choice of operating system and great-looking 8.9in screen, but the price needs to druppel for Toshiba’s very first netbook to make a big impression.

With its mini-me styling, comprehensive software suite and effortless to use operating system, it’s unlikely to dislike the NB100. Now some of its rivals are concentrating solely on larger, Ten.2-inch Netbooks, it’s a refreshing switch to see a terugwedstrijd to the original form-factor, and this is a machine you can truly take anywhere. It’s worth having a go if you can, however, spil some users will undoubtedly find the petite keyboard too cramped. Other than that, it’s an excellent effort, and one that comes very recommended.

Intel Atom: The Intel Atom series is a 64-Bit (not every prototype supports 64bit) microprocessor for cheap and puny notebooks (so called netbooks), MIDs, or UMPCs. The speciality of the fresh architecture is the ",te order", execution (instead of the usual and swifter ",out of order", execution). Therefore, the transistor count of the Atom series is much lower and, thus, cheaper to produce. Furthermore, the power consumption is very low. The spectacle vanaf Megahertz is therfore worse than the old Pentium 3M (1,Two GHz on par with a 1.6 GHz Atom).

Power efficient, cheap and slow Netbook single core CPU. Because of the in-order execution, the vertoning vanaf MHz is worse than Core Solo or Celeron M processors.
